List of the Top Ten Most Common Emotions

Emotional responses in human beings are predicated both by biological predisposition and environmental stimulus. Because of this, it is impossible to determine or rank which emotions are most common, as each individual is unique in terms of biology and life experiences. Still, psychologists have worked to identify and define many major emotions which humans may experience. Ten common emotions are:

Joy

Joy is a state of mind characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction or pleasure.

Trust

Trust has several forms, including a willingness to be vulnerable to the actions of another and a reasonable belief on behalf of the trustor (the person offering trust) that the trustee (the person receiving trust) will behave in a way beneficial to the trustor.

Fear

Fear is an emotional response to a perceived external threat that may include rapid heart rate, a widening of the eyes, tightening of the muscles and increased sweating.

Surprise

Surprise is an emotional arousal based on the experience of an unexpected event. Surprise can be pleasant, unpleasant or neutral.

Sadness

Sadness is characterized by feelings of loss, disappointment or helplessness. Many psychologists consider it to be the basic opposite of joy.

Disgust

Disgust is a reaction to something perceived as offensive, unclean or inedible. Human beings can be disgusted with literal objects, such as garbage, or with actions, opinions or ideas found to be offensive.

Anger

Anger is believed to be the most difficult emotion to categorize, but it is often described as the feeling one experiences in taking action to stop or eliminate a perceived external threat. Some psychologists argue that fear precipitates anger, while others contend that an individual can become angry without first experiencing fear.

Anticipation

Anticipation is a feeling of pleasure one experiences while waiting for an expected positive event or experience.

Love

While love is frequently cited as a generic emotion, psychologists such as Robert Plutchik have suggested that the eight previous emotions listed in this article are basic to all human beings and necessary for the preservation and evolution of the species. Plutchik argues that advanced emotions, such as love, are a combination of two or more generic emotions. He believes that love, experienced as strong feelings of attachment and attraction, is a combination of joy and trust.

Remorse

Characterized by feelings of regret and sometimes shame, remorse is also seen to be an advanced emotion. Psychologists believe regret to be a combination of surprise and disgust.

Love Sick Symptoms

When a person is "love sick," he can't think of anything but the object of his desire. Being love sick generally happens to younger people who have little or no experience with an actual consensual loving relationship. Immaturity paired with hormones and strong emotions will erupt into a bad case of love sickness. Poetry, love songs and Shakespeare plays are chock full of the heady expression of love sick people, pining away for the ones they love.

Clammy Hands

Clammy hands and dry mouth are a sign of being love sick. The body's nervous system goes haywire--too much moisture in the hands, too little moisture in the mouth.

Preoccupation

When the lover is not nearby, the love sick person will feel bereft, depressed, moody, tearful, anxious and preoccupied. The love sick person will experience loss of appetite.

Rapid Heartbeat

Upon seeing the lover, rapid heartbeat is usually paired with a rush of emotion in the chest. The pumping of the heart can cause blushing in the face and neck.

Confusion

Confusion may occur when the lover is nearby. Stuttering, staring and clumsiness are all aspects of this symptom.

Extreme Desire

Sexual arousal, desperation and extreme desire are symptoms that can build into an obsession with the lover.

Symptom Duration

Despite its intensity, love sickness is a passing state of mind, lasting anywhere from a few days, to a few months. It's difficult to retain the intense level of emotion that love sickness awakens in the body--usually the feelings lead the lover to either express her feelings and reduce the anxiety, or as time passes, the feelings lose their power as the reality of getting to know the real person takes away from the fantasy.

Obituary...The Boxer..Lean Spinks

Leon Spinks, Boxer Who Took Ali’s Crown and Lost It, Dies at 67

He was an Olympic champion with few pro fights under his belt when he surprised the world by beating the champ in 1978. Things did not go smoothly after that.

Leon Spinks defeated the heavily favored Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight championship on Feb. 15, 1978. “He had the will to win and the stamina,” Ali said afterward. “He hit pretty hard.”

Leon Spinks, who scored one of boxing’s greatest upsets when he defeated Muhammad Ali to capture the heavyweight championship in February 1978, but lost his crown in a rematch seven months later and never again found glory in the ring, died on Friday night in Henderson, Nev. He was 67.

His death, in a hospital, was announced by his wife, Brenda Glur Spinks, in a statement released by the family’s public relations representatives. His family announced in December 2019 that he had been hospitalized for treatment of prostate cancer that had spread to his bladder.
